The Institute of Physics is a dynamic research center with more than 40 professors and around 180 academic staff members. Our work ranges from fundamental research to innovative applications – for example in quantum optics, particle physics, astro-particle physics and modern imaging techniques.

We have an excellent international network and cooperate with leading research institutions such as CERN in Geneva, the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble and TRIUMF in Vancouver – we are even active at the ICECUBE neutrino observatory at the South Pole. By participating in the PRISMA+ cluster of excellence, the MPGC (Max Planck Graduate Center) graduate school and various Collaborative Research Centers, we offer excellent opportunities for scientific development and interdisciplinary exchange.

Students and young scientists benefit from a wide range of courses and the opportunity to actively participate in current research projects – ideal for final master theses or doctorates. In addition, our mechanical workshop combines technical training with state-of-the-art research practice.

Organisationally, research at the Institute of Physics is divided into the following working groups:

Here you will find further information on our research areas, coordinated research programs, as well as scientific seminars and colloquiums:

Of course, we are also involved in numerous courses in the faculty’s individual degree programs. Information on studying physics can be found here:

A wide-ranging scientific lecture program as well as a series of different offers for students, teachers and the interested public complete the spectrum of our activities.

The mechanical workshop on the ground floor of the Institute of Physics is your central contact point for all mechanical challenges – large or small. We support you in the planning, construction, conversion and expansion of experimental setups and are on hand with help and advice for all physicists working experimentally at the institute. Our team currently consists of 17 experienced mechanics and 12 trainees. Together, we work with a wide range of materials – from metals and plastics to special materials.

Our range of services includes

  • CNC milling and turning
  • Wire EDM
  • Welding
  • Pump maintenance
  • and more
